Week 1 Share

We were up till 2am last night bagging shares. The kale is a bit wind whipped, but we harvested it yesterday, and put row covers over all our greens (lettuce, kale, collards, dandelion, chard), this not only helps with protection from the intense prairie winds, but also aids in natural pest control and moisture retention. The Napa cabbage does have some insects present, we recommend a soak in a light salt water solution to rid the critters, still tastes great, and is super nutritious. We use very little OMRI approved insecticides on our plants, so insects are something we tolerate. We decided to throw in a dozen eggs because we missed the asparagus window.Below you will find the details on the first weeks share.

  • Kale (this has become a real staple crop for us, we bake it, saute it, or blend it up raw into smoothies)
  • Dandelion greens (These bitter tasting greens go great in soups and are great in pastas)
  • Radish (whats spring without a radish, try sauteing them in some butter, or roasting for a milder flavor)
  • Head Lettuce (we love the look and taste of the butterhead lettuces, use as a veggie tortilla)
  • Napa cabbage (we make kimchi, or use in stir fries, soups, or raw in a slaw works too)
  • Herbs (cilantro & dill, make some scrambled eggs with dill, or use the dill on popped corn)
